Security Awareness for Johnson County, Kansas. Morning and afternoon sessions. This custom presentation was designed to address the top concerns of the IT Security team in Johnson County. The morning session audience was IT personnel and the afternoon session was for all end users.

2007 Conference Presentations

Monday, November 5, 2007 (10:30-11:45 am, session AWR-1) K Rudolph, CISSP and Chief Inspiration Officer of Native Intelligence, Inc., spoke at the Computer Security Institute (CSI) Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, at the Reagan National Airport.

Attendees learned new tricks for making messages stick through demonstrations, interactive exercises, and story telling. They also learned how to communicate in ways that work with, rather than against, the brain.

This session had the third highest attendance at the CSI Conference and received outstanding reviews.

The Seven Secrets of Security Awareness presentation included an analogy challenge (with prizes), entertaining stories, and demonstrations of how to explain an abstract concept visually.

Take Away ...

... practical methods for improving security behaviors by communicating in ways that work with the brain, not against it. Attendees received handouts including a mind map of the Seven Secrets.

June 7, 2007K Rudolph presented the Seven Secrets of Security Awareness at the New York Cyber Security Conference in Albany, New York. Participants received a security awareness fortune cookie (orange flavored) with one of six security-related fortunes, color slide handouts, and two mind maps:

FIAC Conference, October 25, 2005 — K participated in a panel presentation on IT Security Metrics.

Workshop for Financial Industry - April 27, 2005 — K presented "Security Awareness Programs - Lessons Learned." Topics included planning, managing expectations, capturing attention, measuring results, and using feedback.

FISSEA Conference - March 23, 2005 — K and Sam Carter presented "Running the River - An Expedition - Reading and Responding to End Users." This interactive presentation addressed how Information System Security Officers (ISSOs) can identify classes of end users (based on the 5 classes of whitewater) and get the security message to each.

  • May 2004, K and Sam Carter presented a break-out session at the NOAA IT Security Conference.
  • April 2004, K spoke at the Department of Interior's Security Awareness Day (at DOI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.).
  • March 2004, K and Sam Carter, presented at the ASIS "Emerging Trends in Security" Conference in Chicago.
  • November 2003, K was the speaker at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for Computer Security Awareness Day.
  • March 2003, K gave a keynote presentation at the Federal Systems Security Educator's Association (FISSEA) conference in Silver Spring, MD. The presentation was the "Seven Secrets of Security Awareness."
  • Summer 2002, K spoke at the INS Security Conference in New Orleans.  The topic was "Security in a SACK."  This entertaining presentation helps Collateral Duty Security Officers increase security awareness among their end users by using creative solutions that don't require a huge budget or a 300-page manual from headquarters.  Principles of awareness, tools, techniques, activities, and resources were covered.
  • October 2002, K presented at the FIAC Conference in College Park MD. The presentation was called "Security Awareness - Duck, Rabbit, or Elephant?"
  • June 2002, K presented at the Census Bureau Security Conference in Suitland, Maryland.
  • K presented at the FISSEA Conferences in 1998, 1999, and 2002.  Topics included "Outrunning Your Headlights - Navigating Changes in the Learning Landscape to Reach Millennium Students" and  "Sensible Computer-based Training Design."  The presentation given to FISSEA in March 1999 won the Crystal Apple award for best presentation at the conference.

K has also presented at the Department of Labor Internet Lecture Series, at NOAA's IT Security Conferences, at the Energy Information Agency, at the Defense Logistics Agency, at the Indian Health Service, at the e-gov Information Assurance Conference, and at the National Computer Security Conference (Baltimore).
